Richard Engel, NBC News chief foreign correspondent, shared this unhappy information Thursday that his 6-year-old son Henry has died. Engel and his spouse have been open about the kid’s battle with a rare genetic condition called Rett Syndrome
Engel wrote on Twitter
“Our loved son Henry passed away, he had the softest blue eyes, a soft smile and a contagious giggle. We usually surrounded him with love, and he returned it and much more.”

Henry died on Aug 9, according to a memorial web page posted on the Texas Children’s Hospital website. He was recognized as a toddler with Rett syndrome, a rare genetic neurological disorder that results in intense physical and cognitive impairments.
In a tweet on Thursday, Engel said: “Researchers are making amazing progress using Henry’s cells to help cure RETT Syndrome so others don’t have to endure this terrible disease.”
